چکیده

This report contains a summary of the 2 Research Coordination Meeting for the Coordinated Research Project entitled, “The Elements of Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE) Power Plants,” held at the IAEA Headquarters, Vienna, Austria, from 4 to 7 November 2003. The goal of the project is to promote and support international collaboration on various aspects of IFE power plants with a focus on addressing interface issues for drivers, targets and chambers. This report includes abstracts of the activities that the participants described in oral presentations at the meeting. Copies of the presentations have been posted on the web site: http://aries.ucsd.edu/LIB/MEETINGS/0310-IAEA-IFE-CRP/index.shtml

Reliability and Availability Analysis of Fusion Power Plants

Major efforts are underway to develop fusion energy for use in electric power production in the furture. While fusion reactor concepts are being developed, appropriate attention must be given to problems relvant to the utility requirements which are likely to be encountered in the commercialization phase. In this paper the expected fusion plant availability is assessed in detail due to the impo...

Heavy ion driven reactor-size double shell inertial fusion targets

Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) is considered as an alternative to Magnetic Confinement Fusion to achieve controlled thermonuclear fusion. The main goal is to exploit the energy released from thermonuclear fusion reactions to produce electric energy. Heavy ion beams were proposed in 1976 as one of the possible drivers in ICF. The method consists in igniting few milligrams of deuterium-tritium...

Overview of Fission Safety for Laser ICF Fission Energy

This paper reviews fission safety design principles and approaches for coupling inertial confinement fusion (ICF) to a subcritical fission blanket, in Laser ICF Fission Energy (LIFE) power plants. LIFE power plants use fuel derived from either spent fuel from fission reactors, or from natural uranium or thorium. By using fusion neutrons, LIFE plants can fission a large fraction of the heavy met...

Lead (Pb) Hohlraum: Target for Inertial Fusion Energy

Recent progress towards demonstrating inertial confinement fusion (ICF) ignition at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has sparked wide interest in Laser Inertial Fusion Energy (LIFE) for carbon-free large-scale power generation. A LIFE-based fleet of power plants promises clean energy generation with no greenhouse gas emissions and a virtually limitless, widely available thermonuclear fuel s...

Damage Threats and Response of Final Optics for Laser-Fusion Power Plants

The final optics for laser-IFE (inertial fusion energy) power plants will be exposed to a variety of damage threats, including high-energy neutrons and gamma rays, x-rays and ions from the target explosion, contamination by condensable gases and particulate, and the laser itself. Experiments and modeling have been performed in order to understand damage mechanisms and possible solutions for tho...
